WASHINGTON – As the United States withdraws combat forces from Afghanistan, Afghan police and army units are suffering a sharply higher casualty rate and in some cases, have negotiated local non-aggression pacts with insurgents to avoid coming under attack, according to a new Pentagon report.

BEIJING -- In one of the most sophisticated bombing attacks in China in recent years, seven improvised explosive devices detonated almost simultaneously during the Wednesday morning rush hour at the Communist Party headquarters in the provincial city of Taiyuan.

NEW DELHI -- In a trial dubbed one of the world’s largest, a special court in Bangladesh handed down the death penalty Tuesday to 152 ex-paramilitary soldiers for the killing of dozens of people during a 2009 mutiny.
