The 2012 Taliban attack left two Marines dead and more than a dozen aircraft destroyed or damaged at the base the men oversaw.

WASHINGTON — Two high-ranking Marine generals were in effect fired Monday as punishment for a brazen attack last year in which Taliban fighters breached a coalition air base in southern Afghanistan, killing two Marines and destroying or damaging more than a dozen aircraft.

The blast, carried out with about 440 pounds of explosives, is the third in eight days in the northwestern Pakistani city. Suspicion falls on the Taliban.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A massive car bomb in Peshawar, the third in a particularly bloody week for the northwestern Pakistani city, killed at least 43 people and wounded more than 100 on Sunday in a crowded market about 350 yards from where a memorial service was being held for the victims of last week's church bombing.

Rates paid for leisure hotel stays grew by +4.2% over 2012 in August, according to Pegasus Solutions, the world's largest processor of electronic hotel transactions. While leisure booking volumes fell just short of 2012 levels, the corporate market maintained enough productivity to post positive year-to-date gains in both bookings and rates over the prior year.
